Mars

2022

The 2022 opposition was not comparable to the 2020 one, Mars only reached ~17.6" apparent size, compared to ~22.6" in 2020. On the other side, this time the northern hemispere was inclined towards us, making it possible to observe regions which have been out of sight before.

Out of curiosity, I started early with my observations, but, well, the results merely show that Mars is a difficult target for a 6" scope except the phase around opposition. Initially, Mars still showed us its southern hemisphere, with a noticeable south polar cap.

Although opposition was drawing near, Mars still showed a significantly gibbous form. Note the dust storm in the southern half over Argyre.

In the days around opposition, the dense North Polar Hood became a prominent and lasting feature.

After some time the haze layers aournd the north pole cleared and gave view to the ice cap.
